细心的你有没有发现，上面这些描写中多处涉及到现在分词（-ing）的用法。

1. 现在分词作定语

表明某人或某物在特定的时间正在进行的行为：

Do you know the woman

talking to Tom? (the woman is talking to Tom)

Police investing the crime are looking for three men. (police are investing the crime)

也可用来表示一般性的事实：

The road connecting the two villages is very narrow. (the road connects the two villages)

I have a large room overlooking the garden. (the room overlooks the garden)

2. 现在分词作状语

常用来表示所描述事件的时间、原因或结果：

Opening her eyes, the baby began to cry.

(= When she opened her eyes…)

Having completed the book, he had a holiday. (完成时；= When/Because he had completed…)

现在分词结构中暗含的主语（即已知但未明确指出的主语）通常和主句中的主语是相同的：

Arriving at the party, we saw Ruth standing alone. (= When we arrived…we saw…)

after, before, besides, by, in, on, since, through, while, with和without等介词可以和现在分词连用表示状语意义：

While understanding her problem, I don’t know how I can help. (Although I understand…)

After spending on much money

on the car, I can’t afford a holiday.
